The Green Idea

Texts in this section are published by project leaders and are not revised by Metro Team.

The project:

- Purchase two metal sit-around tables - Install in an area of the playground shaded by native maple trees - Create a grouping of three outdoor tables for class use and recess use in a shady area of the playground

How we'll make it happen:

- As mentioned in our previous application (405559) this is the second phase to develop this area into a shaded outdoor classroom with tables and benches. Your generous grant allowed us to purchase trees and have them planted in November. - We would like to purchase two sit-around metal pedestal tables from "Blue Imp Play and Park" catalog at a total cost of $1551.49 each, including taxes and shipping. - Board approval has been granted for installation of these tables when purchased.

How it will positively impact the environment:

- Students will have a shaded place to sit out of harmful UV rays. Recess games, drawing and reading can happen at the tables. - Teachers will have a shaded outdoor space to conduct environmental projects with their classes.- The space will become an outdoor classroom connecting children more closely to nature.

How we'll measure its success:

- Yes, increased student use of the area can be measured. Presently there is no seating in this area. We expect that students will be drawn to this beautiful area of the playground.- Increased teacher use of this area for class work can be measured. We expect teachers will make frequent use of this outdoor classroom.

Who's participating :

- Eco School team members will apply for grants to cover the entire cost of the tables.- School Council have been approached to contribute funds towards this project. - Environment club members will help to plan where the tables will be positoned.- School Board personnel will install the tables into the ground.
