The Green Idea
The project:
Our school community is working with Ontario Eco-School/Evergreen Initiative to plant several trees, place seating rocks and create an outdoor education focus for a section of our school yard. This corner of our school yard has one side that is fenced. We will use this space to display environmental education poster boards. This area is adjacent to the parking lot and will help to absorb heat and carbon coming from the road.
How we'll make it happen:
We are being advised regarding the organization and implementation of this project. We are at the planning stage. First planning meeting is scheduled for November 27th at Durham District School Board.Following this meeting, the school community will be encouraged to create the final design ensuring that the main features of shade, seating and educational boards are included. A second meeting regarding purchasing and ocntracting will occur in February at the board office.
How it will positively impact the environment:
This project will allow students a shade area during the warm months. Currently this is only provided along the fence line. This project will create an area of focus for environmental education to be used by all grade levels. The seating areas will allow outside lessons to occur. The placing of trees will attract birds and other small wildlife such as squirrels and chipmunks.
How we'll measure its success:
The success of this project will be measured by the amount of projected shade to the area, carbon reduction and the amount of classroom use of the educational materials. There will be numerous immeasurable benefits to the students to be involved in the beautification of their schoolyard. This will also make the schoolyard of Prince Albert P.S. more attractive to the local residence on Old Simcoe Rd. that look onto the school.
Who's participating :
-Eco-team-School community council-Classes will be involved in planting and assisting to design the area and environmental posters.-A local artist will be commissioned to create the posters with the assistance of students.
