Greening St. Joseph's Catholic Secondary

The Green Idea

The project:

Recently,St. Joseph's Catholic Secondary School has started an Ecoteam. The main focus of the Ecoteam is to "green"ify our school environment and raise environmental awareness. Our ideas are:*planting 5 trees and perennials - providing shade to students*installing permanent garbage cans with covers -reducing litter on school grounds*install enivronmental awareness bulletin board

How we'll make it happen:

*purchase 5 trees/plants from local nursery; adminstration, with the Ecoteam plant the trees - plant in early spring; maintained by Ecoteam*purchase the garbage cans and Ecoteam selects optimal locations to install (a.s.a.p.)*install the bulletin board in main hallway - Ecoteam and science classes are responsible for posting ideas,pamphlets, meetings, newspaper articles, and class projects promoting healthy living (a.s.a.p)

How it will positively impact the environment:

*trees will provide shade while students wait for their buses;beautifying St. Joe's; provides habitat for wildlife*the garbage cans will allow people to have a place to put their garbage;this will decrease litter as well as making the grounds more appealing*the bulletin board will provide current information;and being in a main hall, will be easily accessible to all the school population

How we'll measure its success:

*trees plantings - observing students using the space while waiting for the bus;*garbage cans - monitor the amount of litter on the grounds;*bulletin boards - information pamphlets, meeting times and dates,tips and ideas will be posted - check for improvement in attendance to meetings;montinoring pamphlets that have been taken
