Eligibility Criteria
1. Objective
- Encourage elementary and secondary schools in Quebec to become involved in projects that benefit the environment and the greater good of their community
- Funding will support projets (from a class or a group) that contribute in a positive way to a healthier environment.
- Funding must be used to support an environmental project affiliated with the school and/or be used to provide equipment or the necessary supplies required by the school to proceed with environmental initiatives and/or a combination of both.
2. Eligibility
To qualify, schools must comply with the following:
- Must be a registered elementary or high school in Quebec
- Must submit application by March 31st, 2011 (submissions will be evaluated on a first-come first-serve basis)
- Must have approval from class teacher/ project leader and school principal
- Must register online at www.greenapplegrants.ca
- Must meet all criteria as outlined below
- Must execute the project/ program by June 1, 2011
- Eligibility is subject to change without notice
3. Criteria of Grant
- Environmental initiatives can take place within school property, outside on school grounds or within the school community
- i.e. Purchase of new recycling bins, tree planting on school property or a weekly clean-up of the community playground
- All environmental initiatives must support at least one of the following environmental goals:
- Ecological resource management: water, energy, raw materials, etc. (Ex.: paper, compost);
- Ecological waste management (Ex.:"No waste" lunchbox);
- Protection of ecosystems and biodiversity (Ex.: Tree planting, park of river bank clean-ups);
- Must submit application by March 1, 2010
- All projects must contain an "awareness" component, and raise consciousness amongst students and/or the community.
- Projects that are accepted must be viable in time, and do so without the continual support of the Green Apple School program (the selection committee will ensure that the program does not finance the same project two years in a row).
- Environmental initiatives can take place within school property, outside on school grounds or within the school community
4. Project Submission (Application)
- Applications must be completed online at www.greenapplegrants.ca by March 31st, 2011.
- The Green Apple School Program concludes on June 1, 2011.
- Applications will require the following information:
- Describe your idea in 3-5 bullet points
- Briefly describe how you plan to execute the idea
- What positive impact will the project have on the environment?
- Who is involved in the project? (Class, school, community);
- Are the results of your project measurable? If so, how?
- How does this project support school curriculum criteria?
5. Funding
- Funding will handed directly to the selected school to cover the expenses of their environmental initiative
- Metro will invest $1 million per province (Ontario and Quebec). Grants worth $1,000 each will be awarded to selected applicants
- Any one school can receive a maximum of two Green Apple Grants during the school year. Two separate environmental initiatives must be submitted in order to be considered for two separate grants
- All funding must support the selected school's environmental initiatives, and those initiatives must meet criteria. The class/school must provide a Summary Report once the project has been completed
- If a grant is awarded, a cheque payable to the school will be presented to the Prinicpal by a local Metro Store Manager. The Store Manager will contact the school to make arrangements for the presentation of the cheque.
6. Summary Report
- If a grant is awarded, a one page Summary Report must be submitted outlining the final project with photos. These may be used for Metro communication purposes*. The Summary Report is due no later than 30 days after the project is completed or by June 30th, 2011.
- The pictures must be original, free of retained rights, and the participant must give full permission to Metro Richelieu Inc to publish those pictures on the Green Apple School Program website and on its Facebook page
- *Photos will be the property of Metro Richelieu Inc. It is the responsibility of the teacher/ project leader to ensure that the parents have signed the waiver before photos are posted on the website. Please fax in a copy of the signed waiver to Green Apple School Program Committee 514-356-5826 when you send us your Summary Report, no later than June 1, 2010.
7. Selection Committee
- Subject to Metro Committee review and approval
- Subject to Metro Green Apple School Program Committee review and approval. The decision of the Metro Green Apple School Program Committee is final.
